International TaTME Registry

The introduction of a new surgical technique such as taTME must take place in a safe and monitored manner. Prospective evaluation of taTME is facilitated by (inter)national data collection, which allows adequate numbers for analysis and a broader overview of the adoption, practice and outcomes of the technique. Thanks to the support and funding by the Pelican Cancer Foundation (https://www.pelicancancer.org/), the first international TaTME registry went live in July 2014. The aim of the registry is to collect relevant and high quality data on transanal resection surgery for benign and malignant conditions. Divided into nine different categories, a vast amount of data is collected on every aspect of patient care from neo-adjuvant therapies, operative details, to post-operative clinical and oncological outcomes.

The taTME registry is a voluntary database maintained on a secure encrypted weblink. All data is pseudo-anonymised and is password protected. Each participating hospital will have access to their own departmental data set, which can be extracted for statistical analysis and review at local audit/clinical governance meetings.

Recent amendments, kindly funded by Pelican Cancer Foundation and the Oxford Colon Cancer Trust, OCCTOPUS (https://www.occtopus.org.uk/), have included the addition of patient questionnaires on functional outcomes and quality of life as well the possibility of uploading specimen photographs and anorectal physiology results. Provision of training and education has also been incorporated onto the registry with the option to identify proctored cases and monitor a surgeon’s progress with Global Assessment Scoring (GAS) forms.
